Kingston’s festive season officially got underway last night as thousands of visitors flocked to the town to mark the official opening of the renowned Christmas Market, with the switch-on of the town’s festive illuminations.
The annual evening kicked off in style with music performances from local band Days are Done, a glow in the dark ballerina performance and an exclusive preview of the festive production at the Rose Theatre, The Snow Queen, ahead of its opening on December 6. As darkness fell, the Snow Queen herself worked her magic and illuminated the town centre for all to see with the help of the Mayor, Cllr Margaret Thompson.
As festive spirit spread across the town centre, local visitors enjoyed a classic brass band set plus a very special performance from the South London Military Wives Choir. Throughout the evening, Snappy Snaps Kingston were on hand to capture festive memories and one lucky visitor even walked away with an early Christmas present in the form of an iPad! Other festive prizes included tickets to the Snow Queen at the Rose Theatre and a family pass to Santa’s Grotto at Bentalls. The evening has kick started six weeks of festive fun for all the family.
Kirsten Henly, Chief Executive of Kingston First, commented:
“Our annual light switch on evening is one of the highlights of the year and we were delighted to see so many people out enjoying the start of Christmas in Kingston. We are looking forward to welcoming many more over the coming weeks with lots more festive activity to come.”
The festive dressing of the town centre including the lights, Christmas market and tree are paid for and organised by Kingston First. For more information on what’s on in Kingston over the Christmas period, visit the In Kingston website inkingston.co.uk/christmas
