For the latest in our member spotlight series, we hear from Fletcher Crane Architects whose chic, modern practice sits proudly at the top of Union Street. We hear all about how they ended up in the heart of Kingston, their approach to their unique work and their excitement about being part of a buzzing, collaborative Kingston community.
Fletcher Crane Architects was established in 2010 in Kingston and after 5 years of being ‘the Architect on the roundabout’ [Hampton Wick] we have recently relocated into the centre of Kingston, next to Boots on Union Street.
We are a RIBA award winning practice; passionate about innovative, crafted and thoughtful architecture that is not rooted to a particular moment but one that transcends fashions. We design for delight and longevity, whilst being intuitive and enthusiastic designers. We adopt an open, engaging and collaborative approach to the design and construction process using a variety of mediums to communicate ideas quickly and effectively. Today the practice is fortunate to be connected with a strong network of consultants and collaborators, providing strength and depth to a growing professional service. We strive to create thoughtful, sustainable, surprising and beautiful architecture whilst maintaining commercial awareness; a quality necessary in maximising value for our private, public and developer clients. Our portfolio consists of a diverse project range, varying in typology and scale. With every commission we draw upon our experience, applying our principles and philosophies to each unique situation.
Although the pandemic has been an extremely challenging time for the business, it has given us the opportunity and focus to move into the heart of Kingston. Ordinarily there would have been more competition for High Street premises and therefore less choice for us to make the step up in terms of size and quality of studio. We have sought to take advantage of the new planning rules (allowing us to occupy retail units) and utilise unused prominent High Street frontage.
We are really enjoying the buzz of being so close to the market place and the heart of Kingston. Our new home seems to be generating interest within the local area with various home owners and businesses approaching us looking to collaborate on exciting new projects in and around Surrey. We are keen to cement ourselves as part of the business and social community of Kingston whilst adding value to the town centre. We look forward to continuing to showcase our exciting design ethos whilst working together with local groups to ensure Kingston thrives as an important destination for the many.
