Did you know that from 1 October 2023 businesses will no longer be allowed to supply, sell or offer most single-use plastics in England?
Businesses have until that date to use up any current stock, and the ban includes selling them online and over the counter (this includes when given away as part of a purchase i.e with a takeaway meal). The ban includes all type of single-use plastic (including biodegradable, compostable and recycled), as well as items wholly or partly made from plastic (including coating or lining).
If you continue to supply them after 1 October, you could be fined. Local authorities will carry out inspections to make sure the rules are being followed. Inspectors can visitor shops/stores, make test purchases and speak to staff.
What Is Being Banned
- Single-use plastic plates, trays and bowls (unless you are supplying them to another business or the items are packaging for pre filled items or items filled at the point of sale)
- Single-use plastic cutlery & balloon sticks
- Polystyrene food & drink containers for ready-to-consume food and drink, including expanded and extruded polystyrene (unless it needs further preparation before it is consumer i.e. adding water, microwaving or toasting)
How To Prepare For The Ban
- Find re-usable alternatives to single use items
- Use different materials for single-use items
- Use up existing stock before 1 October 2023
