We wanted to provide you with an update on the Council’s review of the Ancient Market Place which has been taking place over the past year.
A year ago we shared with you that the Council was gathering information and ideas for how the Ancient Market Place can continue to play an important role in the town centre while being relevant today and in the future. The Council has developed and published a new Ancient Market Place Strategy and the Council’s Corporate and Resources Committee will be asked to approve this on 19 March.
Kingston First has always recognised the cultural, historic, community and economic importance of the Ancient Market Place and believe it has the opportunity to be a more welcoming, greener and flexible space with more investment. We will continue to contribute to this work as the Council brings forward changes for the space and encourage the Council to seek views from all those that experience the Ancient Market Place; traders, businesses, residents and visitors.
While we have managed the daily market and Ancient Market Place space the best we can, we and the traders have been restricted because of challenges within the space including the permanent Market stalls, which are owned by the Council and which are no longer fit for purpose.
We are gathering our thoughts and insights on how to make the most of the space, the market and the Ancient Market Place’s overall contribution to the town centre. We will share our thoughts and recommendations with you for your feedback in the coming months. In the meantime, we will continue to manage the day to day operations of the market, as well as continuing to programme the Ancient Market Place with year round community and cultural events and activities.
If you have any questions about the Council’s Ancient Market Place strategy, please contact the Council.
